From the beginning of the book Lily did not come across as a violent person. Why did she get so angry finding out about her mother and throw honey at the wall? All of the times T. Ray made her kneel on the grits she never protested, so why did she get so upset now?

When Lily was a baby I think Deborah was the kind of mom that was caring and loving toward Lily.  However, I thought T-Ray was the kind of dad that let Deborah do all the work and caring for Lily.  After Deborah left him with Lily I think T-Ray began to take out his anger at Deborah on Lily.

I think Lily is a very young minded girl who is lost and is trying to find her way. I think she has no idea what she is doing, and no grasp of the severity running away entails.

Theme: Death Gives way to Life

Hi All,

I know I have been asking for you to do a lot of work each night, and yes we are pressed for time with this book.  I understand, but please keep working hard.

Some thoughts I want to leave you with (and yes I will be checking my email and the Blog while I'm in Boston) are:

1) Maddie wrote a post about the similarities between Lily and May's "darkness," and I think this is something important to discuss.  If Lily is so upset when June judges her entirely based on skin color and is offended that June "Doesn't even know me", then the unifying message here is we need to "know" each other beyond what we look like.  This much is obvious to you I know.  So, then, what do we have in common?  Or what do our characters have in common from which they can build understanding?  A good place to start seems to be May and Lily's sadness for the ones they have lost.  How can this or does this give way to life then, as our theme suggests?

Relationships of Rosaleen and August to Lily

I think Rosaleen is like a mother for Lily because she really care about her. Also August is taking care of her life to. So I think she is a grandmother for her. What do you think?

Hi All,

For our final unit we will be reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, and responding here on the blog.  This blog will serve three functions:

1) We will all be able to engage in one big conversation about the novel, much like we did for Catcher in the Rye, but every freshman's voice will be heard here no matter the class (B, D, or E).

2) Since we will be away on Spring Program possibly before we get a chance to finish, this forum will allow us to continue to read and respond even though we will be away from class.

3) This will serve as a way to evaluate reading as a supplement to quizzes
